The Postal Loans service enables certain groups of students to have books sent out by post and books can then be returned by post. This service is for students who are studying part-time or distance learning or DDS students.

How do I request an item?
To request an item, even if it is on loan to someone else, please submit your request by emailing the details below to email@example.com.

Should I request the item using the library catalogue FINDit?
No, do not request the item yourself using FINDit, the request will be done by library staff.
How long will it take?
We will aim to deal with a request within 2 working days if the item is not on loan. You will be contacted via your USW email if there is likely to be a delay in delivery.
I live abroad can I have a book posted?
No, this service is only available to students with a UK postal address.
How do I know which books are held in the Library?
By checking FINDit.
What books can I borrow?
You can borrow any one or four week loan book. Items in the following loan types cannot be borrowed – high demand loan, reference, statistics, abstracts, theses and journals.
How long can I borrow them for?
Four week loans will be loaned for four weeks and one week loans for two weeks. This loan period includes the postage times.
How many books can I borrow?
You may borrow up to your normal borrowing limit. Please ensure there is room on your library account before you request an item.
How much will it cost?
You will not be charged to have books posted to you but you will have to return items by recorded-post i.e. a signature is required for delivery.
Can I be fined for late return of an item?
Your books will auto renew if they are not needed by anyone else so you won’t accrue fines if you forget to renew your books.
The new fine rate for USW items will be £1.00 per day/part of a day up to a maximum of £20.00 per item. If you have borrowed a Merthyr College item the fine is still 15p per day per item, up to a maximum of £10.00 per item.
It is important that you read emails from us and that you check My Account regularly to ensure that your books are not needed by others.
All Library members are provided with an account which can be accessed via the My Account link on FINDit.
My Account allows you to:
- see your loans and the dates they are due back
- renew your loans
- view your reservations and their status
- see any fines you have incurred
- save records to your e-shelf
You login to My Account using your student ID number and password.

How can I pay for fines and charges?
Payment can be made in the following ways:
- By phone by debit/credit card for amounts over £3.00 on 01443 483400.
- By cheque for amounts below £3.00; please make it payable to the University of South Wales and post to the address above.
- By cash/card payment at any of our four USW libraries.
What if someone else requests the book I have borrowed?
If a book is requested by another reader then it will be recalled and you will receive an email to your USW email. The book must be returned to the library by the end date of the loan period for the book. Non-return of recalled items will lead to fines being charged at the approved rate.
How do I return my books?
Please return books, in original packaging to the address at the top of this page.
Please send it via the Recorded Signed for Delivery service to us. This will mean you have proof of postage and we have to sign to say we have received it.
What happens if it is lost in the post?
Any lost items will be charged to you the cost of replacing the item.
